Famous Musicians from Croatia in the opera Madama Butterfly
Talented young singer from Croatia Sandra Plamenac will perform the title role in G. Puccini’s masterpiece Madama Butterfly at the Astana Opera. On August 6, Maestro Ivo Lipanovic (Croatian National Theatre, Split) will be conducting.
Natural operatic voice, high professionalism, depth of character portrayal and bright personality of Sandra Plamenac captivate listeners. Opera lovers at home in Croatia and abroad highly appreciate her wonderful vocals, as well as her ability to convey diverse characters and perform the most complex music. Her repertoire includes leading roles in operas by R. Wagner, G. Verdi, G. Puccini, C. Gounod, H. Purcell, W.A. Mozart, P. Tchaikovsky, U. Giordano, F. Alfano, etc.
Earlier, in May, Sandra Plamenac has already sung at the Astana Opera, performing the role of Mimi in G. Puccini’sLa Boheme. The soloist emphasized that even in the best opera houses of Europe she has rarely met artists of such high level.
“In a short time the Astana Opera managed to gain the whole world’s admiration. The company works like a group of wizards. When crossing the opera house’s threshold, you find yourself in another world. This, of course, speaks of the highest professionalism of both those who perform onstage and those who work behind the scenes. I am very excited to be performing here again,” shared Sandra Plamenac.
The part of Madama Butterfly is one of the most complex operatic roles, both in terms of vocal technique, physical endurance and acting skills. Sandra Plamenac fully conveys the heroine’s depth of character. The singer noted that listeners understand and feel close to Cio-Cio-san because the plot of G. Puccini’s opera Madama Butterfly is based on real events and almost unchanged.
“Prejudice does not allow Pinkerton see the real Butterfly – a sensitive, loving and brave woman who sacrificed everything for him. Cio-Cio-san idealizes Pinkerton and America, whereas he is no better than the rejected by her Japanese Prince Yamadori, changing wives. There are bad people and good people everywhere. Unfortunately, she finds out about this too late. Interestingly, Butterfly has never been and was not going to be a geisha. Only at the insistence of her mother she has learned this art due to tragic circumstances in her family. I advise everyone who believes that women only need money, and that you can buy love, to listen to this opera,” said the vocalist.
If Sandra Plamenac has already performed at the Astana Opera, for Ivo Lipanovic this will be the first acquaintance with the Kazakhstani audience. The famous Croatian maestro has extensive experience in conducting opera performances, symphonic concerts and choral works. He is a laureate of prestigious awards, including the first prize at the young conductors competition in Zagreb. Ivo Lipanovic’s performances took place with great success at the best theatres and concert halls in Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Korea, Turkey and other countries of Europe, Asia and America.
Principal Soloists of the Astana Opera will perform the main roles: Lieutenant B.F. Pinkerton – Honoured Worker of Kazakhstan Medet Chotabayev, Suzuki – Honoured Worker of Kazakhstan Dina Khamzina, Sharpless – Yevgeny Chainikov. Artists of the Astana Opera Chorus and Symphony Orchestra will also present their art, principal choirmaster – Honoured Worker of Kazakhstan Yerzhan Dautov.
