The Sixth Season: the Astana Opera’s Accomplishments
The Astana Opera’s sixth theatrical season ended with the performance of national musical art gem – Yevgeniy Brusilovsky’s opera Kyz Zhibek.
During this ‘theatrical year’, high art connoisseurs could hardly keep up with exciting events taking place one after another: premieres, tours, victories at prestigious international opera and ballet competitions, expanding the opera house’s creative contacts with foreign colleagues and much more.
Even so, according to the statistics, the past theatrical season will appear as follows:
145000 viewers attended performances at the opera house. The company presented 7 premieres with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan: Gioachino Rossini’s opera Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Michel Fokine’s one-act ballets: Chopiniana to the music of Frédéric Chopin and Scheherazade to the music of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin, Gioachino Rossini’s opera La Scala di Seta, Giacomo Puccini’s opera La Bohème and Adolphe Adam’s ballet Giselle were featured for the audience’s attention.
The opera house received 2 awards: the State Prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan in literature and art was awarded to a group of authors: Toleubek Alpiyev, Alan Buribayev, Sundet Baigozhin, members of the creative team of the Non-Commercial Joint-Stock Company “State Opera and Ballet Theatre “Astana Opera” for the production of Akhmet Zhubanov and Latyf Khamidi’s opera Abai. The opera house also received International Professional Music Award BraVo in the field of classical arts, in which the Astana Opera became a leader in the category “The Concert / Theatre Venue of the Year”.
As part of the “Rukhani Zhangyru” program, the company gave highly successful tour performances in Italy (Genoa, Rome), Spain (Valencia), Russia (Moscow, Novosibirsk), Uzbekistan (Tashkent) and the cities of Kazakhstan (Karaganda, Kokshetau). On its stage, the opera house welcomed on tour the Abai Opera House from Almaty and on August 17 and 24 the Karaganda Academic Theatre of Musical Comedy is expected on tour.
On its triumphal tour to Tashkent, which took place within the framework of the Year of Kazakhstan in Uzbekistan, the company presented national classical masterpiece – Akhmet Zhubanov and Latyf Khamidi’s opera Abai and Giacomo Puccini’s opera Madama Butterfly.
Throughout the year, there were many exciting successes of the Astana Opera’s artists, who received government awards, orders and medals, and also became winners of many international competitions. For example, the Conductor of the Astana Opera Ruslan Baimurzin won the Grand Prix of the V International Competition for Conductors “Altyn Tayaksha” named after the People’s Artist of the USSR, State Prize laureate Mukan Tulebayev.
Opera and ballet company soloists not only brought glory to the Astana Opera, but also made their contribution to promoting a positive image of Kazakhstan abroad. Principal Dancer of the Astana Opera, Honoured Worker of Kazakhstan Bakhtiyar Adamzhan regularly takes part in the most prestigious cultural events in Italy, Switzerland, France, Russia and other countries. In addition, Bakhtiyar Adamzhan performed with Aigerim Beketayeva at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes. The gala concert of the world ballet stars Viva Maïa was dedicated to the legendary ballerina Maya Plisetskaya.
Principal Soloist of Astana Opera, Honoured Worker of Kazakhstan Zhupar Gabdullina performed with great success at the Bashkir Opera and Ballet Theatre. The singer presented the main part of Odabella in Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Attila together with the famous bass Ildar Abdrazakov in the title role. For his performance of Sharpless in Puccini’s opera Madama Butterfly at the Genoese Teatro Carlo Felice, Italian listeners showed their appreciation to the Astana Opera’s Principal Soloist, Honoured Worker of Kazakhstan, State Prize laureate of the Republic of Kazakhstan Sundet Baigozhin with stormy, unceasing applause.
The Astana Opera Soloist Yevgeniy Chainikov performed Domenico Cimarosa’s opera Il Matrimonio Segreto at the Spanish Teatre de Sarrià in Barcelona under the leadership of the renowned music director, tenor and pedagogue Raúl Giménez.
During the sixth season, memorandums of cooperation were signed at Astana Opera: on February 9, a meeting was held between the Director of the Astana Opera Galym Akhmedyarov, Director of the Astana Ballet Alexandr Sovostyanov and General Director of the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia Vladimir Urin. The general management of two opera houses and the ballet theatre signed a Cooperation Agreement, as part of the realization of the plans of the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan to implement the cultural strategy of Elbasy Nursultan Nazarbayev. In addition, on June 4, the opera house’s Director Galym Akhmedyarov and the Artistic Director of the Saint Petersburg Music House, famous cellist, People’s Artist of Russia, Professor Sergey Roldugin signed a Cooperation Agreement important for the development of cultures of the two countries.
The atmosphere of friendship reigned at the 5th Astana Piano Passion International Festival of Classical Music and Competition for Young Pianists, which was held at the Astana Opera. Many young musicians from different countries fought for the titles of prizewinners from May 12 to 18, 2019. The competition was founded in 2013 thanks to the joint initiative of the outstanding musician, People’s Artist of Russia Denis Matsuev, Imangali Tasmagambetov (currently the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Russian Federation) and the Public Fund “Accordi di Astana” with the support of the Akimat of Nur-Sultan city and the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The Opera House of Good Deeds
The Astana Opera’s team creates a festive mood, brings joy of meeting with classical art to orphaned children, children from low-income families, disabled people, veterans and many others. Thus, the opera house holds more than two dozen charity concerts per season. The artists presented exciting programs for the Baby House, a specialized children’s home, and also for the Nursing Home of the Akmola Region.
To the New Season with New Projects
The Astana Opera’s seventh theatrical season will open on September 8 with the solo recital of the Honoured Artist of Kazakhstan Zhannat Baktai. The premieres of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Don Carlos on October 11 and 13 and Léo Delibes’ ballet Coppélia on November 22 and 23 are also scheduled for the autumn period. On October 20, the company will present Gioachino Rossini’s opera La Scala di Seta on tour in the city on the Neva River – Saint Petersburg. What is more, this is by no means the whole program!
